Entrance HallwayTorrane is the campus bar for Billy Blue College of Design (Torrens University), located within the Wilcox Mofflin Building at 46-52 Mountain Street, Ultimo, Sydney. Originally built as a hide and skin warehouse in 1911, this Heritage Listed building is iconic to the evolution of architecture in Ultimo. The building boasts original double brick walls and concrete flooring, solid timber posts and an exposed original timber ceiling. Over the years, two additional storeys have been added, as well as a contemporary extension to the east side, and internal changes reflecting the businesses which were accommodated within the building.To design a functional, relaxation space where the consumption of alcohol can be done responsibly in a friendly, safe and engaging space. The bar will primarily openi as a cafe during the day, and transition into a bar at night whilst also serving as a student area showcasing student design. The overall look and feel needed to be a relaxed , versative and inviting environment and required the use of the Torrens University colours and logo.The final design is a vibrant mixture of Australian designers and natural materials, which work together to compliment the original elements of the building. Both student and professional designers are prominently featured resulting in a holistic, creative atmosphere.Ceiling hung plants hint towards the concealed bar entrance, which greets guests through a deep charcoal lined hallway scattered with student artwork and featuring an illuminated sign highlighting the Torrens University logo. The bar space opens up to table seating consisting of the crafted Fletcher Chair by WORKSHOPPED and bespoke forest green velvet banquette seating. More student artwork is illuminated here with a diffused glow by Satelight Design's Hadron-W Aeon wall lights.A curved timber bar lit by Ross Gardam's g old Ora 450 pendants, sits comfortably in the centre of the room and elegantly echoes the tinted arch window giving views out onto the street. Woven pendants by Pop & Scott break up canopy of plant life which lift and energise the space, while climate neutral, sustainable flooring panels by Organoid in Wildspitze were used to improve acoustic performance within the bar. This flooring is made from organic alpine hay material but to also improves the aroma which often results in this type of interior and also adds both tactile and visual interest.
