I, Myself, Me

I, Myself, Me

Life is a journey of discovery. Colette has an amazing ability to guide, nurture and influence others with selflessness and ease. Through a newfound desire of self-discovery, Colette celebrates giving back to herself, what she so freely gives others.

Most of Colette’s adult life has been shared with a partner. Through a vast array of experiences she has lived, grown, learnt and discovered much about the world, as well as herself, however she was yet to experience a time solely devoted to her individual self growth. Now at a point in life where she is able to devote time to herself she can truly begin her own “I, Myself, Me”; something that will only continue to develop in years to come.

I met Colette only last year, before she had the chance to begin this exciting journey. We met through work, and even though she and I have had different upbringings and experiences, right from the start we felt like we had grown up together. We both felt instinctively that we were meant to be in each others lives; we share a strong connection which I can’t really explain.

Colette has found a place with limitless boundaries to discover herself, without having to worry about anyone else. Planning this series organically evolved into a casual photographic experience that captured a range of simple moments which Colette enjoys, within the confines of her bedroom. Simple, yet special, intimate moments.

All the final photographs were taken on the most beautiful, warm, sunny autumn day. Colette was lying in bed as the sun was streaming into the bedroom. For a moment, the sun cheekily crept into the camera causing some lens flare. I checked the images and noticed that this lens flare had created a beautiful soft, dreamy glow. This glow enhanced the calming nature of Colette lounging around on her bed and these images form the first two within my series.

The other three images within the series contain a brighter, more playful side of Colette, though without directly being cheeky moments. A low depth of field, creamy bokeh and negative space reinforce Colette as the subject of the images, further reinforcing the subject of the series. These brighter images reflect her self-discovery becoming clearer as each day goes by.

The image I chose to print was my favourite of all the photos taken as soon as I saw it on the back of my camera. The dreamy lens flare coupled with crisp white sheets, a wall tapestry of a glowing sunset over the ocean and Colette’s beautiful curly hair hiding her face really encapsulate Colette through and through to me.

After initial weeks of deliberation and a lack of inspiration for this assessment, I turned it on it’s head to create something I am incredibly proud of. To be able to document this part of Colette’s life and show how beautiful she is to me inside and out is something I will forever cherish.
